The university decision and a 10-year golf plan

Toomey grew up in New Zealand and progressed through representative age-group golf. His official New Zealand Open profile says his family valued education and that he initially attended university. After his first year, he questioned whether to continue studying or commit fully to golf.

His mother asked him to create a dedicated 10-year plan before making the leap. Toomey said he produced it in roughly 30 minutes. That decision became the foundation of his attempt to build a professional career.

2014 New Zealand Stroke Play champion

Toomey’s defining amateur victory came at Hastings Golf Club in 2014. He entered the final round tied at 10-under with Tae Koh—now known as Taco Golf—and Sam An. After opening with a double bogey, Toomey answered with four consecutive birdies and ultimately closed with a three-under 69 to win by two strokes.

The result made him a New Zealand national champion at age 21 and created a connection that later became central to Team George: Toomey and Taco competed for the national title more than a decade before becoming YGT teammates.

From rookie professional to three-time Charles Tour winner

Toomey turned professional in 2017. In the opening round of that year’s New Zealand Open, he shot a six-under 66 with seven birdies, placing himself near the lead in only his second event as a professional.

Archived season records list him second on the 2018 China Tour Order of Merit. That tour name matters: available evidence supports “China Tour,” not the separate claim that he finished second on PGA Tour Series-China.

2019 DVS Pegasus Open

Toomey earned his first four-round Charles Tour victory after finishing regulation at 10-under. On the second playoff hole, he holed a bunker shot for birdie to win.

2019 Carrus Tauranga Open

One week later, he won again with rounds of 67, 64, 62 and 65. His 22-under total produced a six-shot victory, and his third round included an eagle followed immediately by an albatross.

2020 Carrus Open

Toomey defended the title at 14-under, winning by one stroke. Those results establish three verified Charles Tour victories: the 2019 DVS Pegasus Open, the 2019 Carrus Tauranga Open and the 2020 Carrus Open.

Stepping away, coaching and returning

Recent interviews describe Toomey as having stepped away from regular tournament competition before mounting a return in 2026. The available evidence does not show that he surrendered professional status, so the careful description is that he stepped away from full-time competition.

His golf work also expanded into coaching. Australian Golf Digest reported that New Zealand professional Michael Hendry worked with Luke Hoyland-Toomey while preparing for the 2024 Open Championship. The evidence supports saying Toomey worked with Hendry; it does not yet establish a permanent coaching relationship.

Building Tooms Golf

Tooms Golf combines high-level competitive golf, New Zealand humor, travel, equipment content and collaborations with creators including Taco Golf, Luke Kwon and Sam Heung Min. In August 2026, the YouTube channel displayed approximately 110,000 subscribers, a dated snapshot that placed it above the six-figure milestone.

Toomey also announced a PGA Tour collaboration built around six videos from the three FedExCup Playoffs events, extending his creator work beyond independent YouTube golf.

Your Golf Tour and Team George

George Bryan selected Toomey second overall in the inaugural YGT draft, making him George’s first selection. Team George’s permanent lineup pairs Toomey with Tae-Wook “Taco” Koh and Josh Kelley.

At the first YGT stop at Pursell Farms, Team George finished fourth and earned $25,000. The result is part of Luke’s current competitive story, but his deeper YGT angle is the reunion with Taco: national-title rivals in 2014 and teammates in 2026.
