From Kentucky to Alabama

Thomas grew up in Louisville in a golf family. His father, Mike Thomas, is a PGA professional, and Justin developed into one of the country’s leading junior players.

At Alabama, Thomas won the 2012 Haskins Award as college golf’s outstanding player. He helped the Crimson Tide win the 2013 NCAA team championship before beginning his professional career later that year.

Rapid Rise to the Top of the PGA Tour

Thomas earned his first PGA Tour victory at the 2015 CIMB Classic and soon became one of the Tour’s most prolific winners. His five-win 2016–17 season included the Sony Open, where he opened with a 59 and set a then-record 72-hole PGA Tour score of 253.

That season ended with Thomas winning the FedExCup and being named PGA Tour Player of the Year.

Two PGA Championship Victories

Thomas won his first major at the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow. Five years later at Southern Hills, he came from seven strokes behind in the final round and defeated Will Zalatoris in a playoff.

His broader résumé includes the 2021 Players Championship, a former world No. 1 ranking and 16 PGA Tour victories. His most recent win came at the 2025 RBC Heritage.

Returning From Back Surgery

Thomas underwent a successful microdiscectomy in November 2025 to address a disc problem that had caused persistent hip pain. He returned to competition during the 2026 season and worked back into form after the extended absence.

His 2026 results were below his usual standard, but his experience, championship résumé and exceptional team record kept him firmly in the Presidents Cup conversation.
