An Amateur Victory That Changed Everything

Shane Lowry grew up in Clara, County Offaly, in a sporting family. His father, Brendan, played Gaelic football for Offaly and was part of the county’s 1982 All-Ireland championship team. Lowry attended University College Dublin and developed into one of Ireland’s leading amateur golfers.

His breakthrough came at the 2009 Irish Open at County Louth, where he defeated Robert Rock on the third playoff hole. Lowry became only the third amateur to win a European Tour event. Because he competed as an amateur, he could not accept the winner’s prize money.

Lowry turned professional soon afterward and earned his first European Tour victory as a professional at the 2012 Portugal Masters. His 2015 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational victory became his first PGA Tour title and established him internationally.

Near miss at the 2016 U.S. Open

At Oakmont, Lowry carried a four-stroke lead into the final round before finishing tied for second, three strokes behind Dustin Johnson.

Major champion

Winning The Open at Royal Portrush

Lowry’s defining victory arrived at the 2019 Open Championship at Royal Portrush. The championship had returned to Northern Ireland for the first time since 1951, and Lowry emerged as the home crowd’s overwhelming favorite.

A third-round 63 gave him a four-stroke advantage. He then handled Sunday’s wind and rain to finish six strokes ahead of Tommy Fleetwood and become Champion Golfer of the Year. It was Lowry’s first major championship.

Team Europe

Three Consecutive Ryder Cups

Lowry represented Europe at the 2021, 2023 and 2025 Ryder Cups. He made his debut at Whistling Straits, helped Europe regain the trophy in Rome and supplied one of the defining moments of the 2025 matches at Bethpage Black.

Facing Russell Henley in singles, Lowry birdied the 18th hole to halve the match. The half-point guaranteed that Europe would retain the Ryder Cup; Europe ultimately completed a 15–13 victory.

Record-setting return

A Second Irish Open, 17 Years Later

Lowry captured his national championship for a second time on September 13, 2026. He closed with a 63 at Trump International Golf Links & Hotel Ireland in Doonbeg, reached 23-under and won by 11 strokes over Patrick Reed and Joaquin Niemann.

The margin surpassed the Irish Open record Bernhard Langer established in 1987 and gave Lowry his seventh DP World Tour victory.
