Roger Steele quick facts
Who is Roger Steele?
Roger Steele is a Chicago-born golf creator, interviewer, event host, entrepreneur and competitive amateur. He is widely recognized for hosting Callaway Golf’s Range Talk, working as an in-arena host and announcer for TGL events, and bringing a direct, welcoming voice to golf media.
Steele’s golf story began at Columbus Park on Chicago’s West Side, where his father introduced him to the game. He later studied civil engineering at the University of Illinois, worked as an engineer, returned to golf around 2012–13, and redirected his career toward golf storytelling.
Growing up with golf on Chicago’s West Side
Steele grew up during the height of Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls, and basketball initially held more appeal for him than golf. His father, Roger Steele Sr., was a Chicago police officer who played golf with colleagues and brought his son to Columbus Park, a nine-hole municipal course on the West Side.
Although Steele showed ability in junior golf, he did not immediately feel comfortable identifying as a golfer. He later recalled that a Chicago Sun-Times story about his junior success was displayed in his classroom—attention he found embarrassing at the time because golf did not feel connected to the culture around him.
That early tension became central to his later work: Steele did not argue that golf should discard its traditions, but he wanted more people to see a path into the game.
Illinois, engineering and his return to golf
Steele studied civil engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He stepped away from competitive golf during college and did not play for the Illinois varsity team. After school, he worked in civil engineering and project engineering.
A work-related golf outing helped pull him back toward the game. Around 2012–13, Steele began playing again after roughly seven years away. Golf created relationships and professional access that he had not fully understood as a child. He eventually left engineering in Chicago and moved to Los Angeles to pursue golf-centered work.
Building a career in golf media
Steele worked with Urban Golf Performance around 2016, helping establish his route into the golf industry. In March 2019, he and former Korn Ferry Tour player Danny Wax co-founded HIPE Media, a creative agency focused on storytelling for athletes, organizations and brands.
His public work grew across social media, branded programming, live events and broadcast assignments. Steele has also served as a Youth on Course ambassador, connecting his own experience at Columbus Park to efforts that make golf more affordable and approachable for young players.
Range Talk
Steele became especially recognizable as the host of Callaway’s Range Talk, an interview series built around candid conversations while Steele and his guests hit golf balls. Guests have included professional golfers, musicians, athletes and creator groups such as Good Good and Bob Does Sports.
CBS and TGL
Steele was part of CBS’s coverage surrounding the 2022 PGA Championship. He later expanded his live-event presence as an in-arena host and announcer for TGL events at the SoFi Center. That wording is important: his documented role is the in-venue experience, not permanent television play-by-play.
