John Peterson at a Glance
Why Peterson’s résumé stands out
In roughly 13 months, Peterson defeated Jordan Spieth at the Jones Cup, edged Patrick Cantlay for the NCAA individual championship and finished T4 with a hole-in-one in his U.S. Open debut.
From Fort Worth to an NCAA Championship at LSU
Peterson played at Louisiana State University from 2007 through 2011 and became one of the most decorated golfers in program history. LSU’s official record credits him with 49 collegiate starts, a 72.58 career scoring average, two tournament wins, 12 top-five finishes, 19 top-10s and 27 top-20s. He earned All-America recognition three times and was twice named First-Team All-SEC.
Beating Jordan Spieth at the 2011 Jones Cup
Peterson and Jordan Spieth completed the 2011 Jones Cup Invitational tied at 1-over 217. Peterson won the playoff after closing with a final-round 68.
Beating Patrick Cantlay for the NCAA title
At the 2011 NCAA Championship at Karsten Creek, Peterson opened with a 74 and stood tied for 47th. He surged into the lead with a competitive course-record 65, then closed with a 72 for a 5-under total of 211. That was one stroke better than UCLA freshman Patrick Cantlay.
The win made Peterson LSU’s first men’s NCAA individual champion in 70 years and earned him the Arnold Palmer Award. He turned professional later in 2011.
The hole-in-one and T4 finish at the 2012 U.S. Open
Peterson reached The Olympic Club through sectional qualifying and without regular status on a major tour. During the third round, he made a hole-in-one from 199 yards on the par-3 13th.
He finished tied for fourth, two strokes behind champion Webb Simpson. The result remains Peterson’s best major finish and earned him places in the 2013 Masters and 2013 U.S. Open.
John Peterson’s PGA Tour career
Peterson competed primarily on the Web.com Tour in 2013 and finished first on the inaugural Web.com Tour Finals money list. That gave him the top Finals priority position and PGA Tour membership for the 2013–14 season. He later regained his card for 2014–15 through the Finals.
Across his career, Peterson made more than 90 PGA Tour starts and earned approximately $2.2 million in official PGA Tour prize money. He did not win a PGA Tour event. Available career records credit him with one professional victory, the 2012 Coca-Cola Walmart Open on the Adams Tour.
Surgery, retirement talk and comeback attempts
Surgery on Peterson’s left hand or wrist led to a major medical extension. At The Greenbrier in July 2018, he missed conditional status by only 0.58 FedExCup points. He initially indicated that he would retire, then accepted another start and attempted to regain status through the Web.com Tour Finals.
Peterson began stepping away from full-time professional golf in 2018, but it was not one clean, permanent retirement. Tiger Woods’ 2019 Masters victory helped inspire another comeback attempt, and Peterson made occasional competitive appearances before regaining amateur status in 2024.
Life after full-time tour golf
Peterson returned to North Texas and built a life outside the tour. He is connected with Westoplex Garage, a garage-door service company in the Fort Worth area, and publicly describes himself as a pilot and farmer. He is also a husband and father of four.
Peterson was reinstated as an amateur in 2024. In January 2026, he returned to the Jones Cup Invitational as a mid-amateur, 15 years after winning the event. His exact 2026 finish is omitted because the official final result has not been sufficiently verified.
John Peterson as Team Wesley’s Event 1 wildcard
Wesley Bryan selected Peterson as Team Wesley’s wildcard at Pursell Farms. He was not a permanent member of the YGT roster. Peterson entered the active lineup at the turn and partnered with Micah Morris in the alternate-shot back nine, where the pair shot 1 over.
Team Wesley completed the team stage at 18 under and advanced to the final against Team Brad. Peterson faced Ben Hadden in the 18-hole singles final, and their match finished tied. Team Brad won 3–1 with one tie, while Team Wesley received the $175,000 second-place team prize. That was a team award, not Peterson’s individual earnings.
Peterson later said the last-minute YGT experience changed his perspective on the playing standard and production scale of creator golf.
Fore The People and Peterson’s creator-golf return
Peterson and fellow former PGA Tour player JJ Killeen created the Fore The People podcast, mixing tour stories, golf discussion and their established chemistry from 2021 through 2023. In 2026, they revived the brand as a competitive YouTube golf channel.
The relaunch gives Peterson a present-day creator identity separate from his former tour career and provides a natural bridge between traditional professional golf and YGT.

What clubs does John Peterson play?
My9Iron does not yet have enough direct evidence for a current John Peterson WITB or Clubs & Specs page. A tournament equipment record from October 2016 documented a predominantly Titleist setup with an Odyssey putter, but that historical snapshot should not be presented as his current bag.
A separate equipment page should wait for direct 2026 visual verification or confirmation from Peterson.
