Ernie Els Setup Lab: Build an Els-Style Bag for Your Swing
Ernie Els is “The Big Easy” for a reason – tall, powerful and smooth, with an XXIO, Srixon and Cleveland setup that lets him flight the ball high without ever looking like he’s forcing it. This Setup Lab takes that real Els blueprint and scales it into three bands based on your 9-iron carry distance, so you can keep the same vibe while matching the clubs and ball to your actual speed.
Step 1: Choose Your Band by 9-Iron Distance
Start with one honest number: your 9-iron carry distance on a good but normal strike. Ignore total with roll, wind and downhill. Think stock shot into a flat green. Once you know that carry yardage, slot yourself into the band that fits below and let the rest of the setup flow from there.
- Band A – Tour Els: 9-iron carry roughly 150–165 yards.
- Band B – Weekend Els: 9-iron carry about 135–150 yards.
- Band C – Smooth Els: 9-iron carry under 135 yards or you prefer easy-speed golf.
Once you know your 9-iron carry, pick the band that matches and use that card as your Els-style roadmap from driver to ball.
Step 2: Pick Your Ernie Els Band
Band A – Tour Ernie Els (150–165 yards)
This is the closest to Ernie’s real Champions Tour setup – plenty of loft in the woods, utility irons instead of tiny long irons, and compact ZX7 scoring irons. It assumes you’ve got higher speed, consistent strike and you like seeing a flatter, more penetrating flight that still lands soft.
- Driver – XXIO 13 driver 8.5–9.5° set neutral or with a soft fade bias, in a mid-launch tour-weight stiff shaft.
- Fairway – XXIO X 3-wood (14°) plus a 5-wood or strong 4-wood, both built to hit high, controlled bullets off the tee and fairway.
- Hybrids / Utility – Srixon ZX Mk II or ZU85 utility irons (2–5) gapped cleanly between the 3-wood and 6-iron for tee shots and long par-3s.
- Irons – Srixon ZX7 Mk II irons (6–PW) with tour-weight steel shafts, slightly compact heads and plenty of workability.
- Wedges – Cleveland RTX 6 ZipCore wedges (52° MID, 56° FULL, 60° FULL) matched to your turf and preferred face-open shots.
- Putter – Bloodline Vale mallet (or similar tour-grade mallet) built at your gamer length and lie with a stable, face-balanced feel.
- Ball – Srixon Z-STAR XV (Tour Yellow) – a firmer, tour-caliber ball for higher speed and control in the wind.
- Apparel – XXIO/Srixon tour-style polo, tailored pants and classic white tour shoes to complete the Big Easy look.
Choose Band A if you have tour-level or plus-handicap speed, hit a lot of greens and don’t mind living with more demanding heads in exchange for maximum shot-shaping and control.
Band B – Weekend Ernie Els (135–150 yards)
Band B keeps the XXIO/Srixon/Cleveland family but dials in more forgiveness and launch help. Think “Big Easy” feel for a solid single-digit or mid-handicap golfer who wants distance and height without fighting a knife-edge setup.
- Driver – XXIO 13 driver 10.5° with the stock lightweight regular or firm regular shaft, set for mid-launch and forgiveness.
- Fairway – XXIO 13 3-wood (15°) and/or 5-wood (18°) tuned to be your reliable fairway and tee option when driver isn’t the play.
- Hybrids – XXIO or Srixon ZX Mk II hybrids in the 19–24° range to replace hard-to-launch long irons and cover the gap into your 6-iron.
- Irons – Srixon ZX5 Mk II irons (5–PW) – a slightly larger, more forgiving chassis that still looks “player-ish” behind the ball.
- Wedges – Cleveland RTX 6 ZipCore or CBX Full-Face 2 wedges in a simple 50°–54°–58° or 50°–54°–60° ladder to keep your gaps tidy.
- Putter – A high-stability mallet (Bloodline, Cleveland Frontline or similar) with a mid-size grip for easy distance control.
- Ball – Srixon Q-STAR Tour – softer feel than Z-STAR XV with plenty of spin and control for mid-speed players.
- Apparel – Comfort-fit XXIO/Srixon shirt, stretch pants and spikeless tour-style shoes made for walking 18 without feeling beat up.
Band B is the sweet spot for most golfers who like Ernie’s smooth rhythm but don’t quite swing it like a Champions Tour winner. You get the same families he trusts, tuned to a more realistic speed window.
Band C – Smooth Ernie Els (under 135 yards)
Band C is for the true “Big Easy” fans – golfers who like swinging smooth, want to hit it higher and straighter, and would rather play more golf with less strain than chase max distance. Everything here is built for launch, forgiveness and feel.
- Driver – XXIO 13 or XXIO 12 driver 11.5°–12° with an ultralight, high-launch shaft in regular or senior flex.
- Fairway – High-loft XXIO 5-wood and 7-wood focused on carry and easy height from fairway lies and light rough.
- Hybrids – XXIO Rebound Drive or Srixon hybrids in the 21–28° range to replace every intimidating long iron.
- Irons – XXIO 13 or Srixon ZX4 Mk II irons (6–PW) with generous perimeter weighting and a confidence-boosting topline.
- Wedges – Cleveland CBX Full-Face 2 wedges in 52°, 56° and 60° for easy bunker escapes and forgiving full swings.
- Putter – A forgiving, high-MOI mallet with bold alignment lines and a soft insert to help you start it on line.
- Ball – Srixon Soft Feel – a low-compression, easy-launch ball built to help smooth swings carry farther.
- Apparel – Lightweight, relaxed-fit polos, stretchy shorts or pants and cushioned walking shoes – Big Easy comfort first.
Choose Band C if you’re under the 135-yard 9-iron mark or you simply love cruising it around at easy speed. This version gives you height, forgiveness and soft landings without asking you to swing out of your shoes.
How This Ernie Els Setup Lab Fits Into My9Iron
Every Els-style setup here starts with your 9-iron carry and your natural miss pattern, then works outwards. Once you’ve picked a band, treat these clubs as a blueprint and have a fitter check lie angles, shaft weights and grip size so the set really matches your body and motion.
Want to dial in your ball even further? Use the My9Iron 9-iron distance to swing speed & golf ball guide and our Ball Lab to sanity-check that your Els-style ball really matches your speed and launch window.
If you’re working on wedges and scoring clubs, the Wedge Lab will help you choose the right wedge lofts, bounce and grinds for the turf you actually play, all while staying in that smooth, Big Easy profile.

Ernie Els Setup Lab FAQ
Should I just copy Ernie Els’s exact tour specs?
Most golfers shouldn’t copy Ernie’s exact lofts, lies, shaft weights and flexes. Those numbers are built around a Hall-of-Fame swing, Champions Tour speed and his specific launch conditions. Use his families – XXIO woods, Srixon ZX utilities and irons, Cleveland wedges – as a roadmap, then choose the band that matches your speed and let a fitter tweak the final details.
Which band is right if my 9-iron is around 135 yards?
If your honest 9-iron carry is right around 135 yards, you’re on the border between Weekend Els (Band B) and Smooth Els (Band C). If you hit it solid most of the time and don’t mind a slightly more demanding iron, start with Band B. If you like effortless height, extra forgiveness and fewer hard swings, Band C will usually score better over a season.
Can I mix pieces from different bands?
Absolutely. Many players will play a Band C driver and fairways for maximum launch, Band B irons for a cleaner look, and then stick with the Band B or Band C ball depending on feel. Think of the bands as three Els-style lanes you can blend, not rigid boxes you’re locked into.
How do I know if the ball is right?
Start with your band’s default: Z-STAR XV in Band A, Q-STAR Tour in Band B and Soft Feel in Band C. Then use the Ball Lab and 9-iron distance guide to confirm that launch, spin and feel match the way you actually play. If chips feel clicky or full shots balloon, step up or down one ball in the ladder.
